I heard about it before: famous or influential people taking over a social media account for a magazine or a brand for a period of time. Now I see it everywhere. Vogue did it, Instyle did it and the brand Bugaboo did it. I guess It all started with the @sweden Twitter account take-over, a very creative concept, I must say.
The @Sweden Twitter account take-over: a disaster?
The Swedish government handed over the @sweden Twitter account to a different citizen each week, with the words: “No one owns the brand of Sweden more than its people. With this initiative we let them show their Sweden to the world.” So far so good, but it went all wrong when people started saying controversial things on this account. It got very much out of hand, which you can read on Mashable. But… they still hang on to the concept and learned from their mistakes. These things happen on social media. You apologize to your followers, or even fire the person responsible who is saying wrong or hurtful things and you go on.
Examples of take-overs
- Actress Kate Hudsen takes over The Instagram account of women’s website and magazine Instyle because she is her july cover model
- Mommy Instagrammer @MadeByLon takes over Instagram account of Dutch stroller brand @BugabooHQ to explain more about a new product they launched
- Model Kendall Jenner (from the Kardashion family) sort of takes over the Instagram account of Vogue . She appears in a series of selfies on Vogue’sInstagram #VogueInstaFashion
I actually suggested to the vtwonen staff designers should take over their Instagram like Piet Hein Eeek, the whole june-edition was about his projects. Or magazine Flow, which can give the account to the spiritual crafters around the globe. So many possibilities!
Come on brands, let the influencers TAKE OVER! Then it’s totally IRL.
